What we actually do

Modern Signwriters Commercial Specialists.

Modern signwriters do everything from the first phone call to the inspection a fortnight after install. The trade still uses "signwriter" as the noun, and the work comes with two old assumptions: brush-and-paint heritage craftsmen on one side, or the cheap printer who shows up and sticks something on a wall on the other. We're neither.

We're the production-and-installation version of the work. Design in software. Fabricate in the workshop — graphics, prints, vinyl, lamination, ACM. Specialised processes that need purpose-built equipment, like CNC routing on complex acrylic and automotive-grade spray finishing, go to trade partners we've used for years. Installation is done by our team, on your building. From the first site visit to the inspection a fortnight after install, your job sits with one team.

Why the install plan matters

10+ yrs

Achievable on premium installs

When materials, substrate prep, and install methods are matched to the building and conditions — and the work is maintained on the right schedule.

A clean exterior sign signals quality before anyone speaks to you. For commercial premises the exterior is the first thing visitors register about the business, and that impression compounds over years — of foot traffic, parking lots, drive-bys, and Google Street View photos. Done well, the sign does its work in the background. Done badly, it sits there reminding people every day.

A good exterior sign depends on both design and installation. The design needs to be legible at viewing distance, correctly scaled, and suited to the building. The installation needs to respect the substrate, fixing points, alignment, joins, access, and weather exposure. The same printed graphic will look different on a well-prepared facade than on a wall someone just stuck it to — and it will hold that difference for years.

For typical lifespans by sign type, see our signage lifespan guide.

What makes our exterior installs different

Five things we do that aren’t standard.

  1. We show you what it looks like on your actual building.

Before anything is made, we produce a visual proof: your sign, sized to your building, positioned on a photo of the actual facade. You see exactly what it will look like installed, in context, on your wall. The mock-up goes through approval before any material is cut. Many sign quotes are based on flat artwork or generic layouts — we prefer to show you the sign on your building so you can approve the scale, placement, and overall look before production. The visual proof removes the imagination step, and the surprise that often comes with it.

  2. Production runs through our workshop. Specialised work goes to trade partners we've used for years.

Graphics, prints, vinyl cutting, lamination, and ACM fabrication all happen in our Rosedale workshop. For specialised processes that need purpose-built equipment, like CNC router cutting on complex acrylic and automotive-grade spray finishing on premium pieces, we use long-standing trade partners. Either way, your job has one point of contact and one team accountable for the result. Quality and timeline are our responsibility throughout.

  3. The site visit isn't a measure-up.

We're checking surface condition, fixing points, water ingress risk, access for installation equipment, and the building structure behind the cladding. We're looking at stud and nog positions for fixing, at whether the substrate is sound, at signs of underlying framing issues. Clients see a conversation; we're running a substrate and fixing assessment. Whether the surface will hold the sign for the next decade isn't visible to the naked eye, so we look for it deliberately.

  4. We come back 1–2 weeks after install.

Once panels have settled through a temperature cycle and fixings have had time to bed in, we return to check everything has held correctly. We check edges, fixings, alignment, any signs of thermal movement. This isn't common in the signage industry — clients often tell us they're genuinely surprised we came back after the install.

  5. When something needs adjusting on-site, you hear about it with the solution.

Sometimes a fixing point moves 50mm, a surface needs different prep, a panel needs trimming. These are normal parts of installation, not failures. We tell you what changed and what we did about it, immediately, never after the fact. Honest mid-job communication builds more trust than pretending everything went perfectly. The clients who notice the small things told to them upfront are the same clients who trust that the big things aren't being hidden.

Our process

Five steps. One team. Quote to two-week check-back.

01 · You get in touch

Step 01 · photo pending

You get in touch

We respond same day, even if the answer isn't fully ready. The first call is to confirm we're on it — clients who enquire and hear nothing for a week go elsewhere.

02 · Site visit

Step 02 · photo pending

Site visit

We come to the building, walk the space together, and run the structural assessment behind what looks like a measure-up. We sometimes identify scope the client hadn't considered — a panel that should be replaced rather than re-skinned, a fixing situation that changes the install approach, an opportunity that hadn't been on the brief.

03 · Visual proof

Step 03 · photo pending

Visual proof

We produce a scaled mock-up on a photo of your actual building. You see exactly what it will look like installed, sign off on the design, and approve before any material is cut.

04 · Production and installation

Step 04 · photo pending

Production and installation

Manufactured in our workshop (specialised work via trade partners where needed), delivered to site, installed by our team. We do a walk-around with you before we leave site — it's the handoff moment, and it matters.

05 · Check-back

Step 05 · photo pending

Check-back

One to two weeks after install, we return to confirm everything has settled correctly. Fixings, edges, alignment, any signs of thermal movement. If something needs adjusting, we sort it then.

What exterior signage costs in Auckland

No single number — but five things move it, and ranges cover most jobs.

There's no single answer because exterior cost has more variables than other types of signage. The five things that move the number:

  1. 01Sign type and material. ACM fascia, 3D acrylic letters, illuminated cabinets, and lightboxes all sit at different price points.
  2. 02Size and quantity. A small fascia sign on a 4-metre shopfront isn't the same job as the same sign type on a 20-metre commercial building.
  3. 03Install complexity. Cherry picker hire, scaffolding, height work, and traffic management add real cost to large or awkward jobs.
  4. 04Council consent. Some exterior signs require Auckland Council approval, especially larger, illuminated, heritage-zone, or road-facing signage. Where consent is required, it can add several weeks and, in our experience, often several thousand dollars depending on the zone, sign type, and documentation required.
  5. 05Power and licensing. Illuminated signs add electrical work and sometimes a registered electrician's certification.

Common questions about exterior signage

Direct answers. Costs and timelines, not padding.

  • A modern commercial signwriter in Auckland handles end-to-end signage projects across four disciplines:

Design. Graphic design, layout, material specification, visual proofs, brand-standards execution.

Production. Printing, cutting, lamination, ACM fabrication in workshop; CNC routing and automotive-grade spray finishing via specialist trade partners.

Installation. Site preparation, fixing to real building substrates, working at height, traffic management, council compliance.

Aftercare. Post-install inspection, adjustments where needed, ongoing maintenance and relationship.

We also manage the council consent process where it applies, run structural site assessments to confirm substrates will hold long-term, and coordinate with electricians for illuminated work. The "signwriter" name comes from the trade roots, but the work today is closer to a small specialist agency: graphic design, materials knowledge, structural awareness, and trade-level installation skill all running through one team. The thing the buyer is actually buying is a sign that's specified correctly, made well, installed properly, and stands up to Auckland weather for as long as it should.
